5 Power Habits To Be A Star at Work

Dear glambitious humans,

To be a super star at work you obviously need to be good at it. However ,  it is not the only thing that is needed for you to be a star employee. There are many other little yet immensely powerful things that will groom you and propel your growth. Listed below are top 5 of those little things that can make you rise above and beyond.

1.Dress-Up:

You have heard it a million times that "Dress for the position that you aspire”. Yes, looks do matter and you create a certain image of your personality and intelligence by the way you dress. The visual memory of you should spell "SMART". When you are well dressed it boosts your confidence which exudes in your body language. Paying attention and care to self-grooming is not at all a vain, silly or shallow behavior. It requires a great deal of effort, patience, time management skill and discipline. That is what it tells about you and the perks are countless.

2.Be Punctual:

Be early to anything and anywhere at work. It makes you look disciplined, reliable and sincere which you are and will become when you're punctual at work consistently. The perks of being the first one to start work every day is immense. It gives you ample time to plan your day, to do the ground work for the tasks and also a head start in finishing the tasks ahead of others. The key is consistency. Always be where you're supposed to be at least 5 minutes in advance and always be the first one on the floor. There is no short cut to this.

3.Use a notebook:

This instills and improves your organization skills Always carry a note book in hand. Make a To-Do list at the beginning of each day. Write down MOM at the end of each meeting. The essence of quality in your work lies in self - review. Making a mini list of checkpoints helps. Also dedicate a section to write down your ideas, any random questions and also list of things that you learnt for the day. If you want to try something different from pen and paper you can use apps such as "OneNote" or simple audio recorder apps. Writings for each day must contain the following things,

1.   Tasks (To-Do List)

2.   Reminders

3.   Meetings (emails and MOM-Minutes Of Meeting)

4.   Learning (questions,learning,answers)

5.   Checklist and reminders

4.Write great emails:

The quality of your emails shows your communication skills which is the key at work.Keep it polite, grammatically right, clear and concise. The convenience with writing a good email is that you have time to frame your sentences correctly and most importantly you will not be judged based on your accent or fillers. Always do a spell check and grammar check before you send out emails. Please remember the magic words ( "Please", "Thank you","request ","kindly") as they are the only things with which you can convey the tone. Keep the convenience of the reader in mind and put in your thoughts in bullet points.

5.Learn and Share:

Every single task that you do gives you something new to learn. Every project has opportunities to explore. To be the most knowledgeable person on the floor keep learning new things and try to apply them in your work. Do your own research and find out new areas to explore. Google new technological words, read articles and  white papers , non-fiction books and about emerging technologies. This not only improves your expertise but also gives you new ideas to innovate in your work. Knowledge you gain won’t grow if not shared. Share what you have learnt with your team members and be open for discussions and ideas. Conduct presentations and sessions to help. This not only improves your presentation skills but also builds your image and profile as a SME, (Subject matter expert).Knowledge is one power that grows when shared.
